Peru nearly caused a sensation at the Male & Female Pan Am Team Continental Championships, before their opponents USA wriggled out of a tight spot in the men’s semi-finals on Saturday.

Peru were 2-0 up through Daniel La Torre Regal, who upset Sattawat Pongnairat, and Diego Mini Cuadros, but Ricky Liuzhou and Phillip Chew/Ryan Chew helped USA draw level.

Peru weren’t done yet, as Regal and Diego Subauste Tokumura took the second game off Ricky Liuzhou and Sattawat Pongnairat to raise their team’s hopes of a memorable upset. However, it was not to be, as Liuzhou and Pongnairat held their nerve and made it home 21-13 21-23 21-13.

USA face Canada in the final – the Canadians dropped a match but were still comfortable winners over Jamaica, 3-1.

Gareth Henry pulled one back for the Jamaicans after Jason Ho-Shue had given the Canadians the lead; Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura made it 2-1 before Paul-Antoine Dostie-Gundon closed the tie beating Matthew Lee 21-14 21-14.

The women’s team final will also feature USA against Canada, with both winning their semi-finals 3-0 against Peru and Guatemala respectively.

Jamie Subandhi, Jamie Hsu and Lauren Lam won their singles matches in just over 20 minutes each to take USA past Peru, while Canada took even lesser time to despatch Guatemala. Brittney Tam, Talia Ng and Catherine Choi were too strong for their Guatemalan opponents, who folded in quick time, with the longest match being Subandhi’s over Alejandra Jose Paiz Quan at 23 minutes.
