USA’s women got the better of neighbours Canada in the Pan Am Team Continental Championships 2016 Group A tie yesterday in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Canada, missing the services of players like Michelle Li and Rachel Honderich, were outplayed by the USA team led by Iris Wang, who won the first singles over Kyleigh O’Donoghue 21-13 21-12.
Qinzi Ouyang brought Canada back into the contest beating Crystal Pan, but Annie Xu gave USA the lead once again in the third singles before Crystal Pan/Iris Wang sealed the tie beating Phyllis Chan/Qinzi Ouyang in a close contest, 20-22 21-15 21-18.
Michelle Tong/Josephine Wu reduced the margin for Canada by winning another close doubles over Annie Xu/Kerry Xu, 21-18 18-21 23-21.
In another Women’s Team Group A tie, Mexico blanked Guatemala 5-0, while in the Men’s Team Group A, Mexico beat Guatemala 3-2 and Canada avenged their women’s defeat to USA 4-1.
Martin Giuffre gave Canada’s men the lead with a three-game win over Howard Shu. Although Timothy Lam pulled one back for USA, Canada’s Jason Ho-Shue and the doubles pairs of Phil Gaumond/Max Marin and Phil Charron/Jason Ho-Shue ensured a comfortable victory margin.
Mexico were down 0-1 to Guatemala after Kevin Cordon beat Lino Munoz, but Job Castillo, Ramon Garrido and Job Castillo/Lino Munoz sealed the tie for Mexico. Garrido won a 55-minute battle over Ruben Alonso, 17-21 21-17 21-10 before Castillo/Munoz held off Rodolfo Ramirez Garcia/Jonathan Josue Solis Rivas 15-21 21-17 21-16.
Mexico’s women had it even more easy over Guatemala as Haramara Gaitan, Mariana Ugalde and Sabrina Solis in singles gave them a winning lead.
