A young Chinese team exited the Happening Hyderabad Badminton Asia Team Championships 2016 after being knocked out by Korea in the quarter-finals yesterday.
Although the Continental championships are a qualifying tournament for the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup finals in Kunshan later this year, China’s loss won’t affect their chances in the final stage since they are guaranteed of a spot as the hosts.
Korea had little trouble seeing off China. Son Wan Ho earned the opening point, beating a below-par Tian Houwei 21-18 21-18 before Kim Ki Jung/Kim Sa Rang (featured image) consolidated in doubles with a win over Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen, 21-16 21-14. Lee Dong Keun closed it out beating Wang Zhengming 14-21 22-20 21-12.
In other men’s matches, India got the better of Malaysia 3-2, while Japan and Indonesia earned identical 3-0 wins over Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong.
India saw a 2-0 lead evaporate with Iskandar Zainuddin and Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi making it 2-2. HS Prannoy however stood firm as he withstood the challenge of Soo Teck Zhi 21-12 22-20 to make it a memorable day for the hosts.
China had no problems in the women’s event as they whitewashed Indonesia 3-0. They were accompanied into the semi-finals by Thailand (3-0 over Malaysia); Japan (3-1 over Chinese Taipei) and Korea (3-0 over India).
