Hosts Mexico made history by winning the men’s team title at the Pan Am Team Continental Championships 2016 that concluded on Saturday in Guadalajara.
Canada, who fell 3-0 to Mexico, were also at the receiving end in the women’s team final as they went down 3-2 to USA.
Mexico were powered by their strength in singles. Lino Munoz (featured image) provided the breakthrough with a rather easy win over Martin Giuffre 21-17 21-7. Job Castillo then consolidated beating Luke Couture 21-11 21-16 in under half-an-hour. Ramon Garrido, who shone for Mexico through the week, wrapped things up with a 21-16 10-21 21-13 victory over Jason Ho-Shue in 50 minutes. Mexico thus booked their spot in the Thomas Cup finals in Kunshan (China) in May.
Earlier in the day, USA overcame a battling Canada 3-2 in the women’s team final.
Iris Wang made it 1-0 for USA beating Kyleigh O’Donoghue but Qinzi Ouyang made it 1-1 for Canada. USA regained the lead through Kerry Xu in the third singles. Canada fought back into the contest through Phyllis Chan/Qinzi Ouyang who earned a three-game win over Crystal Pan/Iris Wang, 21-14 17-21 21-15.
Annie Xu/Kerry Xu finally swung the tie USA’s way, holding off Michelle Tong/Josephine Wu 21-19 23-21 to help USA win the title and clinch a place in the Uber Cup finals in Kunshan.
