South Africa (featured image) emerged men’s team champions at the Africa Continental Team Championships 2016 beating Mauritius in the final.
Mauritius however won the women’s team title overcoming Egypt 3-0.
In the final on Friday, Jacob Maliekal gave South Africa a sound start beating Georges Julien Paul 21-15
21-14. Prakash Vijayanath increased the lead with a straight games win over Aatish Lubah.
Christopher Paul raised hopes for Mauritius when he won a close third singles over Cameron Coetzer, 21-19 15-21 21-19, but Andries Malan/Willem Viljoen shut out Mauritius in the next match to take the tie for South Africa, who will be the African representative at the Thomas Cup finals.
Mauritius had little trouble taking the women’s team title over Egypt and ensuring a spot in the Uber Cup finals in May. Kate Foo Kune was too strong for Hadia Hosny in the opening singles (21-10 21-17). Nicki Chan-Lam was equally at ease over Menna Eltanany in the second singles, before Yeldy Marie Louison wrapped things up in 20 minutes over Doha Hany, 21-14 21-11.
In the men’s semi-finals, South Africa beat Ghana 3-1, while Mauritius beat Algeria 3-0. The women’s semi-finals saw Egypt blank Ghana 3-0, and Mauritius do the same to Uganda.
