The 2024 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships concluded Sunday in Lodz, Poland, with Denmark emerging victorious in both categories.
The finals day started with the women’s event, with Denmark facing Spain. The opening match saw European champion Carolina Marin secure an early lead for her country with a 21-19 21-12 win over Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt.
Mia Blichfeldt and Line Christophersen put up strong performances in the subsequent singles battles against Clara Azurmendi and Beatriz Corrales but the decisive match came in the women’s doubles, where Christine Busch/Amalie Magelund clinched victory in straight games. Their 21-13 21-13 success over Paula Lopez/Lucia Rodriguez sealed Denmark their fifth straight title.
The men’s final was a highly anticipated clash between France and eight-time winners Denmark.
Despite France’s best efforts, Denmark won the first two matches in straight games. The highlight came when Christo Popov took on Rasmus Gemke in a match that extended to three games and lasted an hour and 23 minutes, with Gemke securing victory for the Danes with a come-from-behind 14-21 22-20 21-9 win.
The triumph stretches Denmark’s run as the only team to be champions in this event since it started in 2006.
